Salient Books are a print-on-demand publishers and are certainly best-described as a very small, family-run UK-based indie “micro-publisher”. There are only two of us – husband & wife team, Wayne and Helen Osborne, running Salient Books from our home in Nottingham.
Established in 2009 to allow Wayne to publish his own works on The Great War (after he’d been given the run around by big, mainstream publishers – who are well known for such behaviour), we have since published titles by other ‘friends and family’ and are now branching out into re-publishing old out-of-print books we come across (and which we think deserve bringing back to life). Our books are not often found in bookshops or in on-line stores - they quite often list our books as "not available" - but they ARE available, and can be purchased direct from us.
Wayne & Helen have been married since 1994. Our daughter, Abigail, very sadly lost a 3½ year battle with leukaemia just after her 15th birthday in 2020.
Wayne spent several years working in industry prior to spending 15 years as a primary school teacher, leaving to look after baby Abigail and to further pursue his academic qualifications. He obtained a Masters Degree in First World War Studies at Birmingham University in 2008, and a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering History at Loughborough University in 2013, focusing on the rapid growth in manufacturing and the changes in the workforce required during The Great War.
Helen worked in administration (covering a multitude of back-office tasks) at the local council for over 30 years before losing her job as a direct result of Abigail’s illness. Since Salient Books was set up, she has been responsible for getting our books ready for publication (proof-reading, formatting, etc), creating the book covers and updating this website. She now works alongside Wayne, carrying on with these roles, as well as assisting with background research and editing. A note about publishing with us:
As there are only two of us, we do not currently have capacity to take on any other authors. Writing, researching and publishing our own books is taking all of our time. We’ll post an update when (& if) we are in a position to take on authors. However, please be aware that we can only help authors get their books into print and our services (and the services of our printers) are charged for. It is also up to individual authors to organise their own publicity and sales.
NOTICE:
We have no links at all with indie book-sellers Salient Books (salientbooks.shop), based in Ohio, USA, which was set up in December 2023. They also run various Salient Books social media sites, which we do not.
