Author, Photographer and Journalist, Ward Muir was a Ward Orderly at the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth between 1915 and 1917.During his time there he was the first editor of the Hospital’s Gazette and wrote two books documenting the hospital’s life and work. The Happy Hospital (originally published in 1918) is the second of these books.
The Gazette described Ward Muir’s work as ... funny without being farcical : its humour is unforced and sincere : unlike many “amusing” war books it contrives to be convincing. It treats of the intimate life of a London military hospital, where jests and pathos are not far apart; it conceals nothing and exaggerates nothing.
BONUS CHAPTERS: In addition to The Happy Hospital this book also includes six articles which Ward Muir wrote for The Gazette in 1919.
This edition also contains short biographies of the author, Ward Muir and the talent behind the hospital's "Tin Noses Shop", Francis Derwent Wood, as well as a history of the Third London General Hospital.
